Meetings in Music @ What's up Bharat
On Sunday 13th, May,2012, What’s up Bharat hosted a jugalbandi in melodious and mesmerizing Bangla folk music; with Moushumi Bhowmick, on the vocals, Satyaki Banerjee on the Dotara and Rosalind Acton on the Cello. The trio also performs as an Anglo-Bengali band, Parapar. The songs were written by Moushumi Bhowmick herself and they centered around themes of displacement and dispossession. The beautiful accumulation of different kinds of instruments and music made the evening memorable and left the audience spellbound! Videos will be up shortly!

The 3iForum: 'What If" @ What's up Bharat
On Sunday, 13th May,2012, What's up Bharat held a lively and an interactive session focusing on civilizational, political and cultural ties between Iran, Israel and India. The discussion was moderated by Kartik Desai along with our panelists Shimon Mercer Wood-Embassy of Israel, Mihir Sharma-Business Standard, Indian Express and Siddharth Ramana-Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies. The topics for discussion were : • What is the context and reason for Irani-Israeli hostility? What needs to happen to improve relations? • Can India be the bridge between the two countries and the people? What is it’s relation with Iran and Israel? • What role can the youth of the three countries play? How can we move beyond the past and look at the future • Role of the US and it’s relation swith Iran-Israel The discussion was an interesting and an intelligent one with a very lively, keen and a knowledgeable audience! The evening ended graciously with Fakhroddin Ghaffari’s enthralling performance on the Djembe, a percussion instrument. Videos from the event will be up shortly

SkillKindle 102- Graphic Designing workshop @ JBC
On 05.05.2012 SkillKindle in collaboration with What's up Bharat, held another interesting and informative graphic designing workshop on Photoshop. The workshop conducted by ms. Manjari Sheel focused on how to create artistic retro effects for backgrounds and photographs in Photoshop.

Mulaqaat evening
What's up Bharat hosted Mulaqaat's 8th gathering at the Jai Bharat Centre on the 29th of April, 2012. Mulaqaat is an initiative to bring together scattered poets from all across the country who want to share their love for poetry with one another . The evening was enjoyed over chai, samosas and some beautiful poetry recitations.

Rural Entrepreneurship and Innovation forum at JBC
An exciting and interesting evening at the Jai Bharat Centre yet again. This time the main focus of discussion was Rural Entrepreneurship and Innovation ,the state and challenges of rural communities and how to overcome these challenges through innovation and technology.Rustam Sen Gupta from Boond and Ajay Chaturvedi from HarVa spoke about their experiences and the challenging work they have been doing in the rural development sector. Great insights from the Prime Ministers Rural Development Fund fellows too!

Sankalp Mumbai
The Sankalp Forum is a holistic ecosystem designed to catalyze impact investments into sustainable and scalable social enterprises globally. TEDxTughlaqRd
TEDx Change held on April 5th at India Habitat Centre, curated by Ms. Nehha Bhatnagar and her team, with support from the arts (Chetan, Shivani) programs/events (Sunaina) and outreach (Apurv, Utkarsh) team at What’s up Bharat. The main theme for TedXchange was ‘Winds of Change’ where Kartik Desai spoke about an integrated online-offline polling platform with art, media and programs and the basic idea behind What's Up Bharat.

Social entrepreneurship evening
What's Up Bharat got together on Saturday, 31st Match, with 50 young entrepreneurs from across India and the faculty from the “How to Win Sales” Entrepreneurial Development Program (Sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology and the Business Edge), at the Jai Bharat Centre. Following a inspirational talk by Sam Pitroda organised by Developing Inclusive Alternatives, the participants ended their week with a panel discussion on social entrepreneurship with Kartik Desai (CEO, What's up Bharat), Pankaj Jain (Founder, Impact Law Ventures), Akshay Tandon (CEO, Skarma) and Arun Bhagwati (Training, Leadership and Motivational Specialist), followed by an interaction with other social entrepreneurs and a stimulating performance by Rio de Djika and participants exploring the Bharat Arts Gallery at JBC.

Shamiana Film Screening @ JBC
Shamiana, a short film club, in collaboration with What's Up Bharat, presented an evening of 'Student Film Special ' on the 24th of March. A screening of six fresh and intriguing films made by aspiring young film makers from different colleges and film schools in India were screened at the Jai Bharat Centre.

Philanthropy and Crafts in India (in collaboration with Dasra)
What's up Bharat hosted in partnership with Dasra, India's leading strategic philanthropic foundation, an exclusive invite-only event for Delhi-based philanthropists, artists, educationists, development specialists, media and some of India's best experts/organisations on arts & crafts and inclusion - Dastkar, Fab India, AIACA, NIFT, UNESCO, Crafts Revival and Creative Bee - for an interaction and discussion over cocktails on the subject of "Philanthropy and Crafts". From 2-6pm, Dasra hosted a roundtable discussion between the experts for its research report on "Crafting a Livelihood: Enhancing Sustainability of Artisans in India". Post this discussion, there was a cocktail & networking reception for the guests and select invitees from Delhi's creative, diplomatic and development communities where all three floors of the JBC were used to present the work of What's up Bharat, Dasra, and the arts/crafts organisations. A true evening of "Kala, Kalpana, Karma" where the 'art' and 'inclusion' worlds became one.

Great discussion at JBC with our guests from La Sorbonne and Delhi's French expats.
On Sunday, 26th Feb, there was an interaction between the students from La Sorbonne, University of Paris (MBA Study Tour 2012). French nationals living in India and the What's up Bharat? team on the topic "Social Change Beyond Borders" a discussion between young Indians and French students and professionals on how can we better understand what is happening in India and engage with each other to achieve change.

The influence of the media is increasing with new methods of communication, social networks, number of channels on the radio and television and so is the mindless interaction. The media literacy training for teachers is meant to introduce the idea of analysis in what is being disseminated as fact.

Murlidhar Memorial Debate at the Tarang Festival @ LSR
As a part of its annual cultural festival, Tarang, Lady Shri Ram College held the annual Muralidhar Memorial Debate on February 4th, 2012 on the topic of freedom of speech (Motion: This House would honour the prophet and ban 'The Satanic Verses). Kartik Desai, Founder of Whats' up Bharat was the judge of this prestigious debate along with Subi Chaturvedi, a faculty member from LSR (and well regarded free speech and media / journalism expert).

On January 20, 2012, a graffiti workshop was organised by Tinydrops for Delhi youth. This workshop was conducted by Remolec Insame, Founder Delhi Graffiti Group. He shared his graffiti style , 2 point and 3 point perspective.

On January 14, 2012, a workshop-cum-discussion was held on changing childhoods. The young girls discussed and debated how childhood and the notions associated with it have changed. They drew pictures, came up with slogans as they tried to understand if it was possible to bring back the childhood that was possibly ‘lost’. They played interesting games, and even discussed ideas like the ‘save playground'.

On January 13, 2012, a workshop was organised by STEP for an audience of young Kashmiri girls on the issue of nature conservation. They were exposed to the ideas of saving forests, preservation of the ecosystem. They engaged with the issue through an interactive session.

Supporting Kutumb Foundation& Tony Blair Faith Foundation for a photo walk
Chitra Katha comprised of a Photo walk aimed at sensitization in beneficiary community, Ghevra and an exhibition cum sale at The Jai Bharat Centre. Each participating photographer submitted two photo entries. 30 best pictures were judged by panelists and displayed at the Jai Bharat Centre in Hauz Khas village. The winning photographers were recognized by Faiths Act and the Kutumb Foundation.

On January 06, 2012, a graffiti workshop was organized by Tinydrops for Delhi youth. Founder of the international graffiti crew Wizard of the styles, King Slone conferenced with with the youth all the way from Brooklyn to share his experience in the graffiti world and Basic lettering, 3D and shading.

Christmas party for young kids in association with Teach for India.
As a part of Corporate Social responsibility, WUB invited 50 young kids from Grade three of Gangotri Public School in Seelampur. These students were accompanied by their teachers who were Teach for India fellows. They were welcomed into the beautifully decorated Jai Bharat Centre and the kids just couldn’t get enough of it. The children were treated to a Christmas cake and a sumptuous lunch. They were enthralled as they witnessed the adventures of “The Lion King”. As they watched several other interesting videos, they voted the “Go to School” video as their favourite. In order to inculcate the value of art, the kids even made colourful, bright Merry Christmas cards. The kids had some bright ideas which they transformed into great action so that they went back empowered. On Dec 25, at JBC, it wasn’t just Merry Christmas for these kids, it was also Kala-Kalpana-Karma

Screening of “Vindhyan Scourge” followed by discussion with the filmmaker
Vindhyan Scourge focuses on deforestation- its causes, consequences on socio-economic conditions, linkages between deforestation and agriculture – while also looking at illegal mining. The movie delves deeper into issues like the man-animal conflict, touching upon eco-toursims and corruption’s role in environmental degradation. It also looks at the Social tribulations associated with the struggle against environmental degradation. The filmmaker Debadityo Sinha, is a young environment activist. He holds a bachelors degree in zoology from Delhi University and presently in his last year of MSc.Tech in environmental science from Banaras Hindu University. He has been raising critical environmental issues since past 6 years. His life as an environment activist started during his graduation where he started a campaign to save wetlands of Delhi. Later, several renowned organisations During this campaign he also produced a short film ‘Wetlands: Are They Wasteland’ which has been screened in several universities and conferences. He also led the 4 months long campaign to ban polythene use in BHU’s South campus, which was later marked by official ban on plastic cups and restricted use on grocery items, a historical move. His affair with the Vindhyan range started with his post graduation stay at BHU South campus in mirzapur. He found the place a biodiverse rich zone and also extremely threathened of habitat degradation. During his exploration over last two years, he found the problem is much greater than it initially seemed to be.

Celebrating 100 years of Dilli with some of the capital's youngest and coolest artists
As the capital turned 100 years old on Dec 11, 2011, Whats up Bharat celebrated the capital’s birthday in a special way by inviting a cross-section of artists at the Jai Bharat Centre. Photographers, street artists and musicians came together at WUB to witness a multimedia exhibition of photos and documentary screenings. Delhi Drummers along with groups of unplugged musicians performed while multiple street artists performed live at the JBC. The day also witnessed the launch of the United Artists of street art initiative.

Water Week - Jal Hi Jeevan Hai (Water is Life) @ JBC (What's up Bharat)
Did you know that Delhi consumes more water per capita than any other city in India? And our thirst is still unquenchable. Join us from November 19th till 26th for 'Jal Hi Jeevan Hai' at the Jai Bharat Centre, Photo Exhibition, Art/Multimedia, Film Screening, Talks and Discussion Forum on the subject of Water and our national capital. The exhibition runs from the 19th to the 26th and focuses on the Renuka Dam being built in Himachal Pradesh as a future reservoir for Delhi as well as multimedia and literature related to the water situation in our capital. Come learn, engage, share your views and your work. On Saturday November 19th, the exhibition will open with a celebration hosted by What's up Bharat and featuring the Delhi Drummers at 5pm at One Haus Khas Village. The rest of the week, the exhibition will remain open all afternoon and each evening there will be informal interactions between students, activists, artists and intellectuals/professionals working on water and related issues. On Thursday, 24th November, join us for a Screening of "The Ground Water Up Project" and "A Dam Old Story" followed by a discussion with young college students and social activists. On Friday and Saturday November 25 and 26, we present a solution workshop and panel discussion with eminent experts on Delhi's water crisis. Influence Volunteer Camp @ JBC
Swechha, a leading youth focused NGO based in Delhi, has been running a very successful project called Influence that aims at creating volunteering opportunities for the youth of Delhi. In a year they engage close to 150 young people from across universities in Delhi and provide them with several exciting opportunities such as, short term volunteering stints with NGOs of Delhi, month long volunteering placements with NGOs across India, Green Fellowships, Rural Exposure Camps, leadership training programs etc. As part of this program, Swechha held a training workshop for 25-30 people at the Jai Bharat Centre on October 22nd, 2011.

Dasra Workshop One
What's up Bharat management team members Kartik Desai and Dipanwita Das participated in the first workshop Dasra Social Impact (DSI) held in Alibaug, Maharashtra from October 8-12. DSI a training and mentorship program for a mix of social businesses and non-profit organizations that are driving social change across India across many sectors. Dasra is a leading social enterprise itself and works with leaders from these outstanding organizations guiding them to strategically think, plan and design for maximum social impact. Thank you to everyone who came to the opening of the Jai Bharat Centre this Sunday to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti and launch the What's up Bharat initiative. We had over 600 guests participate in activities including a street play, gallery opening, open house (event space) and celebration including live art, music, audio-visuals, film screening and a fire dance.
